John Adams

HBO’s Documentary Mini Series, “John Adams” is really great. Of course, I like history and I like Paul Giamatti, and Laura Linney (who play John and Abbigail Adams), so I was bound to like it. But I think it’s compelling enough that most people would like it, even if they normally find historical documentaries dry. This one is anything but dry.

This website http://m.imdb.com/title/tt0472027/goofs discusses some of the inaccuracies, and perceived inaccuracies in the series.

“Episode 5 shows John Adams brushing his teeth with a toothbrush – this is not incorrect, although tooth brushing was not the most common form of dental hygiene at the time. Most people, especially the poor, would have rubbed their teeth with a rag and salt or ashes. Tooth brushes were in use in China c. 1400, in England about 1690, and mass produced tooth brushes were available in the 1780s. The modern American toothbrush was invented in 1938.”

Egad, every time I contemplate life before the 1970’s I shudder. Whether the issue is human rights, civil rights, women’s rights, or something as basic as hygiene it makes me so happy to be alive now and not then.

So if you’d like one of these fancy, newfangled, mass-produced, American style tooth brushes give us a call. We can help you with that. 703-532-1712 FallsChurchSmiles.com

  1. He may be brushing, but not very effectively. As I remember it Paul Giamatti’s teeth were black at the end of the series.

  2. I will have to watch this. Big fan of the Founding Fathers, and John Adams. I am glad to hear it is not the normal Dry documentary.
