Sugar & Baloney!

Misleading information abounds on the internet. Check out this opening line from an article on QZ.com, “Modern dental hygiene would have been quite unnecessary for ancient Romans living in Pompeii, as research has revealed that they had impressively healthy teeth” http://qz.com/516672/ancient-romans-had-no-need-for-dentists-because-of-one-food-they-didnt-eat/?utm_source=YPL.  I say, baloney!

I assure you, no matter how great your teeth are oral hygiene is key to keeping them that way. However, I’m not sure exactly what the author means by, “modern” dental hygiene. Although I am guessing she means tooth brushes and toothpaste because she says, “Though Pompeii citizens never used toothbrushes or toothpaste, they had healthy teeth thanks to their low-sugar diet.” The author seems to be vilifying sugar as the only thing that causes dental problems.

Here’s what I can promise you. You can eliminate processed sugar from your diet entirely and still have dental problems if you do not remove the bacteria that accumulate on your teeth every day. The only way to do that is with good oral hygiene. Check out this fact from WebMD, “‘The truth is, acid produced by bacteria in your mouth is the cause of cavities,’ says Kimberly A. Harms, DDS, an American Dental Association spokeswoman. ‘Any carb you eat can start that process. That includes sugar as well as rice, potatoes, bread, fruits, and vegetables'” http://www.webmd.com/oral-health/healthy-teeth-14/cavities-myths.

Don’t get me wrong, the less processed sugar one consumes the better, not only to avoid tooth decay, but also to make room for calories from nutritious foods like fruits and veggies. But hey, most of us will indulge in some sugary something. When you do be sure to brush your teeth for two full minutes, with fluoride tooth paste, a soft bristled brush, and use tooth-picks or floss. That’s having your cake and healthy teeth too!
